Liga Privada No. 9 Belicoso – Connecticut Broadleaf at Its Finest

Some cigars get their reputation from expensive packaging and clever advertising. Liga Privada No. 9 Belicoso earned its following the harder way. Good tobacco. Careful blending. And a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that does a tremendous amount of the heavy lifting.

The Belicoso brings a different shape to Drew Estate’s celebrated No. 9 blend. At six inches long with a 52-ring-gauge body and tapered head, it’s a handsome cigar with plenty of tobacco behind that dark wrapper. Pick one up and you’ll notice the heavy, almost leathery appearance of the leaf. Deep brown. Slightly rustic. There’s nothing delicate-looking about it.

Underneath sits a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and a combination of Honduran and Nicaraguan long-fillers. The components work together to produce a powerful, layered tobacco profile that made this blend famous.

Flavor Profile – Espresso, Dark Chocolate, and Earth

The opening character is unmistakably Broadleaf. Dark roasted coffee, dense earth, and an assertive black pepper note establish the foundation. There’s a little natural sweetness tucked underneath, although it doesn’t rush to introduce itself.

As the cigar settles, the profile grows deeper. Bitter chocolate and leather begin mixing with the coffee notes. A little charred wood comes through. The texture feels substantial, with the kind of rich tobacco character that stays on the palate between draws.

Further along, the sweetness becomes a little more noticeable, bringing balance to the darker flavors. Pepper remains part of the experience, but it doesn’t have to dominate every inch.

The finish is long. Earthy. Rich in roasted tobacco character.

Why the Belicoso Shape?

That tapered head isn’t there strictly for appearance.

The Belicoso gives the smoker some flexibility when cutting the cap, allowing for a slightly different draw opening than a traditional straight-sided cigar. The pointed shape also gives this 6″ x 52 vitola its recognizable profile.

It’s an attractive alternative for smokers who already enjoy the No. 9 Robusto or Toro but want something with a different feel.
