AJ Fernandez New World Decenio Review
Ten years is a long time in cigars.
Long enough for a blend to become familiar. Long enough for smokers to know exactly what they expect when they see the New World name on a box.
Then AJ Fernandez decided to mess with that expectation a little.
The AJ Fernandez New World Decenio, a new arrival for 2026 at NH Cigars, celebrates a decade of New World with a darker, more refined approach. Mexican wrapper. Nicaraguan binder. Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers. Soft box press.
Sounds simple.
It isn’t.
First Look at the AJ Fernandez New World Decenio
Decenio looks like it means business.
The Mexican wrapper is dark, oily, and rustic without looking rough. The soft box press gives the cigar some weight in the hand, too. Not brick-shaped. Just enough press to make it feel different.
The aroma off the wrapper leans earthy and woody with a little sweetness underneath.
Nothing crazy yet.
That comes after the flame.
First Third
Right away, Decenio has some bite.
Pepper shows up early, especially through the nose, followed by earth and dark tobacco. There’s wood underneath everything. A little roasted coffee starts creeping in after the first few minutes.
The surprising part?
It isn’t overly aggressive.
You might expect a dark Mexican-wrapped AJ Fernandez cigar to come swinging. Decenio certainly has strength, but the opening feels more controlled than wild.
Pepper. Earth. Coffee.
Then a faint cocoa-like sweetness starts rounding things out.
A good start.
Second Third
This is where the cigar gets more interesting.
The pepper backs down a notch and the darker flavors get a little smoother. Coffee becomes more noticeable. Wood stays around. Cocoa comes and goes.
Not every puff tastes identical.
Good.
There’s also a deeper tobacco sweetness that starts showing itself here. Nothing sugary. More like the natural sweetness you get from well-aged tobacco.
The strength begins moving toward medium-to-full at this point, but flavor is still doing most of the work.
That’s important.
Some cigars get stronger and forget to get better.
Decenio doesn’t seem interested in doing that.
Final Third
The last third turns darker again.
Earth gets heavier. Espresso comes forward. Pepper wakes back up.
The sweetness from the middle doesn’t completely disappear, but it gets pushed into the background as the cigar becomes richer and warmer.
This is also where the strength becomes more obvious.
Not ridiculous.
Just enough to remind you that you’re smoking an AJ Fernandez cigar.
Slow down a little here.
You’ll enjoy it more.
Construction and Burn
The soft box press feels comfortable and gives Decenio a solid presence without being awkward.
Smoke production is generous, and the blend works especially well when you give it some time between draws. Puff too quickly and you’ll probably pull more pepper and heat out of it than you need.
Let it breathe.
There’s plenty happening already.

Made for somebody who wants to spend some time with the blend. The wider 58-ring gauge stretches out the experience and gives the cigar a different feel from the Robusto and Toro.

What Does Decenio Mean?
“Decenio” means decade.
Makes sense.
But there’s another layer to the New World story.
The original New World was developed by AJ Fernandez and his father, Ismael Fernandez. So this isn’t simply an anniversary of another cigar in the portfolio. It’s ten years of a line with family baked into its history.
And the New World name itself reaches even farther back, referencing tobacco’s connection to the New World.
Ten years.
Two generations.
One cigar carrying the story forward.

Final Thoughts on the AJ Fernandez New World Decenio
The AJ Fernandez New World Decenio doesn’t feel like an anniversary cigar that exists just because the calendar said it was time to make one.
That’s probably the biggest compliment we can give it.
It has enough connection to New World to feel familiar, but the darker Mexican wrapper and richer profile give Decenio its own identity.
Earthy. Peppery. Coffee-heavy at times.
A little cocoa.
Some sweetness when it decides to show up.
And enough strength to keep experienced smokers interested without turning every puff into a contest.
If you already like AJ Fernandez, this one is easy to understand.
If you like darker wrappers and medium-to-full cigars, even easier.
Our take: Decenio earns its anniversary band. Start with the Toro. Then argue with yourself about whether the Robusto or Gordo is better.
That’s half the fun anyway.
