Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto – Connecticut Broadleaf at Its Finest
The Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto doesn’t look particularly intimidating until you get a closer look at the wrapper. Dark. Thick. Almost rough in places. It’s the kind of Connecticut Broadleaf that looks like it spent plenty of time getting ready for the rolling table.
And that’s part of the story.
Drew Estate developed Liga Privada around a selection of carefully grown and aged tobaccos, eventually settling on the ninth blend as the one worth keeping. The name stuck. So did the reputation.
In this 5″ x 54 Robusto, the blend has a broad, substantial feel without the extra length of a Toro or Corona Doble. The Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper brings deep tobacco richness, while the Brazilian Mata Fina binder and Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers add structure to the overall flavor.
There’s a lot happening underneath that wrapper.
Flavor Profile – Dark Chocolate, Espresso, and Natural Sweetness
The Robusto opens with a heavy roasted character. Strong espresso, dark earth, and a punch of black pepper are the dominant impressions. There’s a little dry wood in the background, along with a darker sweetness that gradually becomes more noticeable.
Once the cigar settles down, the chocolate notes begin to round out the profile. Not sweet milk chocolate. Think unsweetened cocoa, roasted coffee beans, and the richness of well-aged tobacco.
Leather and pepper give the middle portion a slightly sharper edge. The smoke remains dense, carrying a substantial mouthfeel without needing any added flavoring.
Toward the finish, the earthy tobacco character becomes more prominent again. Roasted coffee, dark cocoa, and lingering spice complete the profile.
A bold cigar from the first inch to the last.
Why the 5 x 54 Robusto Works
There’s a reason so many cigar manufacturers offer their best blends in a Robusto. It’s a practical shape that gives the tobacco plenty of room to express itself without requiring an especially long smoking session.
The Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto takes advantage of that traditional format.
Its 54-ring gauge accommodates a substantial filler blend, while the five-inch length keeps the experience relatively compact compared with the larger sizes in the line.
For smokers who want the full No. 9 flavor without reaching for a longer cigar, this size makes a lot of sense.
Connecticut Broadleaf Makes the Difference
Connecticut Broadleaf isn’t supposed to look perfectly smooth and delicate. The heavy texture, visible veins, and dark coloring are part of the leaf’s natural appearance.
Drew Estate uses a stalk-cut, stalk-cured process for the No. 9 wrapper, allowing the tobacco to continue drawing nutrients from the stalk during curing. The resulting leaf contributes much of the cigar’s distinctive depth and character.
It’s a demanding tobacco to work with. But when properly grown, cured, and blended, the results can be exceptional.
