Plasencia Alma del Cielo: A Nicaraguan Puro Grown Above the Clouds
Plasencia Alma del Cielo is not another dark, heavy Nicaraguan cigar built entirely around pepper and raw strength.
It goes in a different direction.
This is a refined Nicaraguan puro with natural sweetness, cedar, toasted nuts, earth, citrus and a gradually developing spice. It has enough strength for an experienced smoker, but it never feels like Plasencia is trying to overpower your palate.
We reviewed the Plasencia Alma del Cielo Boreal, a 6.2 inch by 54-ring-gauge Toro that gives the blend enough room to develop without losing its concentration.

Alma del Cielo translates roughly to Soul of the Sky. The name fits the story behind the tobacco.
According to Plasencia Cigars’ official Alma del Cielo blend information, the tobacco is grown at Finca San Julián in Condega, Nicaragua, at approximately 1,300 meters above sea level.
That high elevation is a major part of the cigar’s identity. Cooler temperatures and the growing conditions found at higher elevations can cause tobacco plants to develop more slowly. The goal is not simply more strength. It is greater aroma, sweetness and complexity.
Of course, every premium cigar comes with a story.
A special farm. A rare seed. An old family tradition.
Those details are interesting, but they only matter when the cigar performs after it is lit.
The Alma del Cielo does.

Plasencia Alma del Cielo Celeste

The Celeste is the shortest and most concentrated size in the collection. Based on its shorter 4 7/8″ x 52 format, the wrapper, cedar and spice may become noticeable earlier than they do in the Boreal.
It is a good option when you want the Alma del Cielo flavor profile without committing to the longer smoking time of the Boreal or Amanecer.

The Boreal sits directly in the middle of the collection.
Not too short. Not oversized.
Its proportions allow the blend to develop gradually while keeping the flavors focused. This is the size used as the main reference for our Plasencia Alma del Cielo review.

The Amanecer uses Plasencia’s six-sided hexagonal press. Based on its 6″ x 60 format, it should provide a cooler, slower presentation with more room for the creamy and sweet characteristics to develop.

Appearance and Construction
The Plasencia Alma del Cielo immediately looks like a premium cigar.
The Nicaraguan wrapper has a clean medium-brown color with a slight natural sheen. It is smooth without looking artificially polished. A few small veins remain visible, which is exactly what you should expect from natural tobacco.
The Boreal feels firm from the foot to the cap. There is enough give to show that the cigar has not been packed too tightly, but there are no obvious soft spots.
The seams are clean. The cap is neatly applied. Overall construction is consistent with what we have come to expect from Plasencia’s higher-end cigar lines.
The aroma from the wrapper brings cedar, dry earth and a softer sweetness that falls somewhere between honey and fresh bread.
At the foot, the earth becomes deeper. There is also a faint floral quality behind the tobacco.
The cold draw offers mild resistance. Just right.
Honey, cedar and a light citrus note appear before lighting.
Nothing aggressive yet.
First Third: Sweetness Before Strength
The Alma del Cielo begins with a smooth combination of cedar, honey and creamy Nicaraguan tobacco.
There is pepper, but it does not crash through the door.
Most of the spice stays on the retrohale as a gentle white-pepper sensation. The natural sweetness is more noticeable. Marzipan is a fair description, although some smokers may simply recognize toasted almond, honey and a slightly doughy richness.
The texture of the smoke is thick without becoming heavy.
That matters.
Some premium Nicaraguan cigars hit hard during the first inch and leave themselves nowhere to go. Alma del Cielo takes its time.
A dry earth note gradually develops underneath the sweeter flavors. Cedar stays close to the front of the profile. The burn line may not remain perfectly straight every second, but it generally corrects itself without requiring much attention.
The opening is balanced. Refined, too.
Second Third: Cedar, Nougat and Orange Zest
The middle portion is where the Plasencia Alma del Cielo becomes more interesting.
The honey settles down and the nuttier characteristics become stronger. Toasted almond. Nougat. A touch of warm bread.
Cedar continues through the center of the profile, connecting the sweeter opening with the earthier flavors that arrive later.
Then a small citrus note appears.
It is not juicy orange or sharp lemon. Think orange peel. Slightly bitter. Slightly sweet.
That citrus note cuts through the creaminess and keeps the cigar from becoming flat.
The strength remains medium through much of this section, then begins moving toward medium-full. The nicotine stays controlled, but the cigar develops more weight and body.
Smoke production stays generous. The draw remains open without becoming loose.
This is the best section of the Boreal Toro.
Everything seems to meet in the middle. Sweetness, wood, earth and spice. None of them take over.
Final Third: Earth and Ginger Spice
The last third becomes darker and slightly stronger.
Earth moves forward. The cedar becomes warmer and a little more charred, while the almond and honey sweetness fade into the background.
A ginger-like spice begins to linger on the tongue. It is brighter than black pepper and not as dry.
There is still enough sweetness left to prevent the finish from becoming harsh.
Smoke slowly here.
When the Alma del Cielo is pushed too quickly, a sharper wood note can develop near the end. Give the cigar time between draws and it stays creamy much farther down than expected.
The Boreal finishes around medium-full. The body is substantial enough to satisfy an experienced smoker, although this is not a powerhouse built around heavy ligero tobacco.
That is not what Plasencia was trying to make.
How Strong Is the Plasencia Alma del Cielo?
We place the Boreal at medium strength through most of the cigar, gradually building toward medium-full in the final third. Storage conditions and smoking pace can still affect how strong it feels.
The smaller Celeste may feel more concentrated because the flavors are delivered through a shorter format.
The larger Amanecer should provide a cooler, broader presentation based on its 60-ring-gauge format.
The Boreal Toro offers the most even balance between flavor, body, and smoking time.
A newer cigar smoker could enjoy Alma del Cielo after a full meal, but its price and complexity make it better suited to someone who already has experience with premium Nicaraguan cigars.
It has strength.
It just does not use strength as a substitute for flavor.
Burn, Draw and Smoke Production
Construction is one of the strongest parts of the Alma del Cielo experience.
The draw offers enough resistance to keep the cigar cool. Smoke production is thick and steady. The ash holds together well, although there is no reason to turn an ash into a balancing contest.
The burn may develop a slight wave as the cigar progresses. Minor touch-ups are possible, especially if the cigar has been stored at higher humidity.
Major relights should not be common when the cigar has been properly stored and rested after shipping.
For the best experience, we recommend storing Alma del Cielo around 65% to 69% relative humidity.
Higher humidity can mute the sweetness, tighten the draw and make the final third feel heavier than it should.
This is also a cigar that benefits from resting in your humidor after delivery.
Plasencia Alma del Cielo vs. Alma Fuerte
Plasencia Alma del Cielo and Plasencia Alma Fuerte are different cigars, even though they sit within the same premium Plasencia portfolio.
Alma Fuerte tends to be deeper, darker and more forceful. Earth, pepper, cocoa and fuller-bodied tobacco usually play a larger role.
Alma del Cielo is brighter.
It leans toward honey, almond, cedar, nougat and citrus before gradually moving into deeper earth and spice.
It still has plenty of Nicaraguan character, but the edges are smoother.
Smokers who enjoy Alma Fuerte but occasionally want something more aromatic and less intense should find Alma del Cielo interesting.
It is not simply a weaker version of Alma Fuerte.
The blend has its own direction.
Is the Plasencia Alma del Cielo Worth the Price?
That depends on what you expect from an expensive cigar.
If you judge value strictly by strength or smoking time, probably not. There are less expensive cigars that burn longer and hit harder.
Alma del Cielo earns its premium position through tobacco quality, construction and flavor separation.
Honey tastes like honey. Cedar stays distinct from the earth. Citrus appears without tasting artificial. The transitions are noticeable without feeling forced.
That level of clarity is difficult to produce.
Ratings and marketing claims are never a guarantee that you will enjoy a cigar. Palates differ. Storage matters. So does the smoking environment.
Still, the actual performance of the Boreal shows that Alma del Cielo is more than attractive packaging built around a high-elevation tobacco story.
This is a serious premium cigar with a clear identity.

The Alma del Cielo works best with drinks that support its natural sweetness without burying the citrus, cedar and toasted almond notes.

An extremely smoky Islay Scotch may not be the best pairing for your first Alma del Cielo.

Plasencia could have built Alma del Cielo entirely around its high-elevation tobacco story.
They did not.
The elevation gives the cigar an identity, but the blend earns attention through the actual smoking experience.
Honey and marzipan at the beginning. Cedar and toasted almond through the middle. Earth, orange peel and ginger spice as the cigar develops.
It changes. Slowly.
The Boreal Toro is our preferred starting point because its 6 1/8″ x 54 format gives the blend enough room to develop without cooling or diluting the flavors too much.
The Celeste should appeal to smokers who want a shorter and more concentrated experience. The Amanecer offers a larger, cooler and slower-burning presentation.
Alma del Cielo is not the strongest cigar Plasencia makes.
It may not even be the loudest.
It is one of the more polished.
