Some cigars try very hard to look serious. Johnny Tobacconaut does not.

The name is strange. The artwork is unmistakably Room101. Matt Booth clearly had no interest in making this thing blend into the background.

Once the cigar is lit, though, the joke mostly disappears.

Room101 Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro is a dark, Nicaraguan-forward cigar made for Room101 by A.J. Fernandez. It is fuller, heavier and considerably more aggressive than the Connecticut-wrapped Johnny Tobacconaut, but there is enough sweetness and movement in the blend to keep it from becoming a straight shot of pepper and strength.

That was the part that surprised us. There is muscle here. But there is also some finesse.

Before Lighting

The Maduro wrapper looks the part.

Dark brown. Slightly rustic. Oily in spots.

It isn’t one of those perfectly polished wrappers that looks like it came out of a photo studio. There is some texture to it, and frankly, that fits the cigar.

In the hand, the Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro feels dense without feeling plugged.

The cold draw gives off darker tobacco, cocoa and a faint earthy sweetness.

Then you light it.

Things change quickly.

The Opening

Pepper wastes no time.

The first few draws bring black pepper, earth and dark roasted tobacco right to the front. There is some espresso underneath, along with a dry cocoa note that hangs around on the finish.

This section has some bite.

Not overwhelming.

But definitely awake.

As the cigar burns past the first inch, the sharpness begins to calm down. Cedar starts working its way in. The cocoa gets slightly sweeter. Coffee becomes easier to pick out.

That initial blast of pepper never completely disappears, but it stops running the whole show.

Good thing.

Into the Middle

This is where the cigar gets interesting.

The smoke becomes heavier and rounder.

Coffee turns darker. Cocoa becomes richer. Earth stays underneath everything, while roasted nuts and occasional baking spice appear between draws.

There is also some natural sweetness here.

Not syrup.

Not candy.

More like the sweetness you get from properly fermented dark tobacco.

It comes and goes.

One puff may be mostly espresso and pepper. The next might lean toward cocoa, nuts and cedar.

That little bit of movement is what keeps the Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro from feeling predictable.

Strength starts climbing too.

Slowly.

By the halfway point, you know this isn’t a mild cigar pretending to be something bigger.

Final Third

Things tighten up near the end.

The sweetness becomes quieter and the profile moves back toward earth, leather, espresso and darker tobacco.

Pepper returns.

Not as sharply as the opening, but enough to remind you where the cigar started.

Smoke it too quickly here and the finish can get a little dry.

So don’t.

Slowing down helps tremendously.

When the cigar stays cool, darker chocolate and coffee continue almost to the end, while the earthy character becomes heavier and more pronounced.

The last third may not be the most complex part of the cigar.

But it does have weight.

And it finishes with purpose.

The Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro leans heavily toward darker flavors.

Expect notes along the lines of:

Black pepper
Espresso
Dark cocoa
Roasted coffee

Natural tobacco sweetness

The overall character is dark and roasted rather than sugary.

That is an important difference.

Strength

This one has some horsepower.

We would place it comfortably in the medium-full range, with the strength moving upward as the cigar burns.

The body is fuller than the actual nicotine strength.

That makes it feel substantial without turning the cigar into a contest.

Experienced cigar smokers should be comfortable here.

Someone who normally smokes very mild Connecticut cigars may want to work up to it.

Construction

A.J. Fernandez has made enough cigars at this point that construction expectations are fairly high.

Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro meets them.

The draw is open enough to produce plenty of smoke without feeling loose. Combustion is generally dependable, and the cigar develops a solid ash when smoked at a reasonable pace.

The Maduro wrapper may occasionally need a touch-up.

Nothing dramatic.

Most of the time, light it correctly and leave it alone.

Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro vs. Johnny Tobacconaut Connecticut

These two cigars share a name.

Flavor-wise, they live in different neighborhoods.

The Connecticut version leans toward cream, cedar, lighter spice and softer tobacco flavors.

The Maduro goes darker.

More pepper.

More coffee.

More earth.

More cocoa.

More strength.

If you enjoy Johnny Tobacconaut but wish it had another level of intensity, this is probably the version you’re looking for.

If you prefer mild and creamy cigars, stick with the Connecticut.

Simple enough.

Best Size

Our pick is the Gordo.

At 6″ x 60, it gives the blend more room to open up while softening some of the sharper pepper that comes through in the smaller sizes.

The Robusto is tighter and punchier.

The Toro falls between the two and gives you a more traditional balance of wrapper and filler.

The Gordo is broader, slower and a little more relaxed. For this blend, that works.

Who Is This Cigar For?

Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro makes the most sense for smokers who already enjoy darker Nicaraguan cigars.

Fans of A.J. Fernandez-style profiles should feel pretty comfortable here.

So should smokers who gravitate toward espresso, cocoa, earth and pepper rather than creamier or sweeter blends.

This probably isn’t the cigar we would hand to someone smoking their first premium cigar.

For an experienced smoker looking for a richer everyday Maduro?

Different story.

Is Room101 Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro Worth Buying?

We think so.

And one reason has nothing to do with limited-edition hype.

This is regular production.

You don’t have to chase it down because somebody made 800 boxes and decided the world needed another impossible-to-find cigar.

You can smoke one.

Like it.

Then buy another.

That’s still a pretty good system.

The Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro offers enough strength for the fuller-bodied crowd, but it also has enough coffee, cocoa, nuts and natural sweetness to keep the cigar from becoming monotonous.

It has personality.

Not just packaging.

Final Verdict

Room101 Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro starts louder than it finishes.

We mean that in a good way.

The opening comes in with pepper and dark tobacco. The middle relaxes, becomes richer and starts showing more coffee, cocoa, roasted nuts and sweetness. Then the final portion turns darker again.

It isn’t perfectly smooth from beginning to end.

It isn’t supposed to be.

There are rougher moments. The final third can get slightly dry if you push it. And smokers looking for a mild, creamy Maduro probably won’t find what they’re after here.

But if you like Nicaraguan cigars with some weight behind them, there is plenty to enjoy.

Dark.

Peppery.

Roasted.

A little weird.
